Boko Haram Abducts 40 Boys, Men In A Borno Village

Suspected Boko Haram gunmen
have kidnapped 40 boys and young
men in a remote village in Borno
state on New Year’s Eve, residents
who fled the isolated settlement said
on Saturday.
Scores of Boko Haram militants
stormed the Malari village and
whisked away the males, aged
between 10 and 23, into the nearby
Sambisa forest, believed to be one
of the Islamists’ major bases.
The news of the abductions came
out only days later, when residents
who fled the village arrived in the
state capital Maiduguri late on
Friday.
“They came in pick-up trucks armed
with guns and gathered all the men
in the village outside the home of
the village chief where they
preached to us before singling out 40
of our boys and taking them away,”
Bulama Muhammad told AFP.
Malari village lies 20 kilometres
(12.5 miles) from the Sambisa forest
and close to the town of Gwoza,
which the militants captured last
June declaring it part of their
caliphate.
“My two sons and three nephews
were among those taken away by
the Boko Haram gunmen and we
believe they are going to use them
as conscripts,” Muhammad said.
“When we heard of the kidnap of 40
boys in Malari by Boko Haram we
decided to leave because we could
be the next target,” said Alaramma
Babagoni, who fled from the nearby
village of Mulgwi.
There was no immediate comment
on the incident from the military in
Maiduguri.
Boko Haram is still holding in
captivity more than 200 schoolgirls it
abducted from their school in
Chibok in Borno state last April.
The Islamists are believed to control
large swathes of territory in Borno
as well as several towns and villages
in two other northeastern states,
Adamawa and YoBo.
Boko Haram’s five-year uprising in
Nigeria has claimed more than
13,000 lives and has seen dozens of
people, including women and
children, kidnapped by the
Islamists.

northern Nigeria, General Muhammad
Buhari had this to say:
“I will continue to show openly and

Sharia movement that is sweeping all
over Nigeria,” Buhari said,

persuade PDP rebel governor, Rabiu
Kwankwaso, to decamp to the APC.
Assuming that only Northerners were
present, Buhari declared the Boko
Haram was a “strategic plan” by the
government of Goodluck Jonathan to
“destroy the North.” When Jonathan
declared a state of emergency in Yobe,
Borno and Adamawa states, Buhari still
saw this with Northern goggles,
insinuating that the President is waging
war on the North.
He protested to the Oyo State governor,
in the context of a dispute between
Fulani herdsmen and indigenous
farmers in the state, that “your
people are killing my people.
This turned out to be unfounded and
perhaps the reverse.
Many of his devoted followers have
since debunked all of them claiming he
never said such things and that we

Nollywood Sikiratu Sindodo has

daughter is alive or not. According

stopped contacting them when she
was one and her daughter, knows
little or nothing about him. She also

rushing into the marriage

What are your plans for marriage?
I don’t need to rush into marriage, I
am taking my time. I feel when it is
the right time I am going to get
married. I have a daughter already, I
don’t see a reason why I should rush
into a marriage and then rush out. I
might even decide not to get
married again; all I want to focus on
is my child.
What’s the relationship between you
and the father of your child?
I don’t know where he is, we had
lost contact when my daughter was
aged 1 and now she is 17.
What if she asks for her father?
I don’t think she will, she is very
comfortable. She is presently an
undergraduate studying Mass
Communication. I am taking very
good care of her, so I don’t think I
need any man. I had her at age 21
and I am still here taking care of
her, she is no longer a baby, when
you talk about her father to her, she
is always like, who is that? He has
never been there at all.
You sound very bitter about him, why
don’t you want to talk about him?
I was young and needed to go back
to school, it is an experience I really
don’t like to talk about. I don’t know
if he is alive or not, it is a long time,
17years ago.

Kano Is Nigeria’s Drug Abuse Hot Spot – NDLEA

In Nigeria, the abuse of all types of
drugs has increased drastically over
the past decade. The nation’s youth
constitutes the group most at risk
from serious problems associated
with addiction. Kano, the largest city
in northern Nigeria, has the highest
rate of drug abuse in the country
according to the National Drug Law
Enforcement Agency (NDLEA)
figures for seizures of drugs,
convictions of drug dealers and
arrests of drug addicts.
In Kano State, 37% of the population
are drug abusers. The NDLEA has
warned of serious consequences to
society if the task of destroying the
culture of drug abuse and its supply
chain does not immediately begin to
bear fruit.
Saving a generation
Nigeria has made great progress in
stemming the supply of drugs with
high profile arrests of traffickers,
seizures of drugs, the destruction of
cannabis farms and closures of
laboratories used for the clandestine
manufacture of drugs. In 2013, 8,324
men and 529 women were
investigated after being suspected of
drug trafficking. Mrs Roli Bode
George, the NDLEA Director
General, said that her mission was
to vigorously pursue the Agency’s
vision of a drug-free society.
This is a problem that does not
discriminate between rich and poor,
old and young. Peer pressure is one
of the major factors that need to be
addressed in any effective
programme aimed at controlling
drug abuse, and mothers must
realise that from a very early age
children need to be watched
carefully for deviant behaviour and
be protected from the influence of
older children involved with drugs.
A war on many fronts
The abuse of drugs is not confined
to urban areas, and the NDLEA is
working alongside the United
Nations Office on Drugs and Crime
(UNODC) and the European Union
(EU) to ensure that services to help
addicts and users are also available
in rural areas and are up to
international standards.
Cannabis and Indian hemp are the
most commonly abused drugs in
Nigeria, although heroin, c*****e,
amphetamines, ephedrine and
ketamine are also brought in by the
traffickers, and there is a range of
products that are more easily
obtained and are cheaper and not
illegal, such as organic solvents,
cough syrups and horse stimulants,
all of which are unpredictable in
their effects and can be highly
dangerous. The so-called ‘bath salts’
contain the active ingredients
methylenedioxypyrovalerone
(MDVP) and cathinone—the latter is
a stimulant similar to amphetamine
and which is also found in Khat.
Bath salts are sold as a synthetic
hallucinogen, a cheaper substitute
for c*****e or LSD and which can
produce extreme paranoia and
violence in the user. An essential
part of the drug abuse problem is
that people who want to take drugs
as an escape for their lives will
reach for whatever is available,
ignoring the health risks.

“You Have Nothing To Offer Nigerians” – Presidency Tells APC

Senior Special Assistant to President
Goodluck Jonathan on Public Affairs
Doyin Okupe said in a statement
yesterday while dispelling the
accusation made by the APC that the
Jonathan-led government had
planned to use the security agencies
to harass and intimidate the
opposition ahead of this year’s
elections.
Okupe described the accusation as
unfounded and baseless, challenging
the leadership of the opposition
party to prove the accusations to
Nigerians.
He said the accusation showed
clearly that the APC remained
clueless “with nothing to offer as the
alternative that the party continues
to preach to Nigerians”.
Okupe said the Presidency viewed
APC’s accusation as another smear
attempt against Jonathan “in order
to win cheap sympathy from the
electorate ahead of the general
elections.”

A 16-year-old girl in Delta State has
given birth to triplets, according to
reports.
Helen Ezeh delivered the babies in
Owhelogbo community, in the Isoko
North Local Government Area of the
state, Leadership reports.
The children were said to have been
born prematurely, after just seven
months of pregnancy.
However, both the mother of the
children and the newborns are
doing well. The father of the
children, John Eyavoro has also
reportedly given thanks to God for
the miraculous birth.
