T-72 Tanks Used By The Military To Destroy Boko Haram [See Photos]

Nigeria welcomes three T-72 M1
main battle tanks (MBT), to fight
Boko Haram, IHS Jane’s Defence
Weekly reports. Additionally, the
source informed of other types of
armoured vehicles (BMPs) and anti-
tank complexes being shipped to
Nigeria via air transport.
The total price of the delivery was
estimated at USD8m
(N1,536,400,000). Excalibur Group
company (Czech Republic), that
specialises in refurbishing military
equipment, was one of the
contractors.
A total of 16 vehicles have been
transported via Antonov An-225
(Mriya) aircraft from Ostrava-
Mosnov airport to the end user’s
location since January 26, 2015.
It would be noted that the recent
success of the Nigerian Army may
be attributed to use of heavy tanks
for military operations in Michika
and Madagali.
Boko Haram insurgents, who use
ZU-23-2 anti-aircraft guns mounted
on their vehicles, cannot penetrate
the explosive reactive (ERA) armour
of a T-72.
The terrorists have RPG-7 anti-tank
hand-held grenade launchers that
are able to damage the MBT.
However, RPG’s firing range is
500m, while the T-72 can demolish
any target from the range of 3-5km.
Facts about T-72 MBT:
– over 25,000 built since 1973;
– exported in over 40 countries
worldwide;
– price USD1…2m. May increase
drastically depending on
modification;
– first ever world championship for
militaries operating T-72 took place
in Russia in August 2014.

Don’t Vote For Pres. Jonathan, He Has Been A Total Failure – Wole Soyinka

Soyinka on Thursday declared that
no one should vote for President
Goodluck Jonathan, as his leadership
has been a complete failure,
according to Sahara Reporters.
He reportedly made this declaration
at the 2015 edition of Vision of the
Child (VOTC) event in Lagos, a
yearly programme inaugurated in
2012.
Soyinka said to the students present:
“I will not vote and I will not
encourage anyone to vote for the
continuation of this government,
simply because your colleagues
numbering over two hundred were
kidnapped.
And the government of this nation
failed to show leadership. So
anyone who says after that event
that I will vote or cast my vote or
encourage anyone to vote for this
regime must be living in Sambisa
forest…
There has been a failure of
leadership. Our children whom you
represent today have been
betrayed…
After that dereliction of duty, after
that failure of leadership, after that
betrayal for our future, for anyone
to think or to put words in my
mouth suggesting that I will vote or
encourage anyone to vote for this
regime is a travesty of intelligence.”
The 2015 edition of Vision of the
Child event was themed “The Road
to Sambisa.”

BreakingNews : Court Urged To Stop Jonathan From Running

Barely 12 days to the general elections,
a suit has been filed at the Federal
High Court, Abuja challenging the
eligibility of President Goodluck
Jonathan.
The plaintiffs, who are Prof. Tunde
Samuel, Dr. Junaid Mohammed, Mr.
Razak Adeosun and Yahaya Ezemoo,
are pleading with the court to
restrain Dr. Jonathan from
contesting, putting himself forward
and or accepting to contest for the
office of President, Federal Republic
of Nigeria at the 2015 presidential
election.
The only defendant in the matter,
which is already assigned to Court 7,
is the President.
No date has been fixed for the
hearing of the application, which
was filed by a team of crack lawyers
mostly Senior Advocates.
The counsel in the matter are Yusuf
Ali (SAN), A. B. Mahmoud(SAN),
Adebayo Adelodun(SAN), Sirajo
Chedi (SAN), Dr. Tunji Abayomi,
Prof. Wahab Egbewole, K.K. Eleja
and A.O. Usman.
Six more Senior Advocates will join
the team whenever the legal
fireworks begin because the
plaintiffs have asked for two SANs
from each of the six geopolitical
zones.
Relying on Sections 135 to 146 of the
1999 Constitution, the plaintiffs
averred that Jonathan cannot take
the oath of office more than twice as
president.
They also said under the
constitution, any President of
Nigeria cannot be in office beyond
eight years of two terms.
They said if Jonathan is allowed to
contest and is sworn in as president,
he would be spending 10 years in
office contrary to the spirit and
intendment of the 1999 Constitution.
They urged the court to determine
three issues and sought for six
reliefs in the originating summons.
The plaintiffs’ prayers are as follows:
*whether having regards to the
intendment and general scheme of
the Constitution, especially the
provisions of sections 1 (1) &(2), 135
(1)& (2), 137(1)(b), 140 (1) &(2),142
(1)&(2) and 146(1)(3)(b)(c) thereof, it
is constitutional, lawful, legal and
permissible for a person to occupy
the office of the president for a
cumulative and or aggregate period
of more than eight years;
•whether having regards to the
intendment and the general scheme
of the Constitution, especially the
provisions of Sections 1(1) & (2) and
135(1) thereof, the defendant is
eligible to seek re-election or contest
for the office of the President of the
Federal Republic of Nigeria for
another term of four years, which
will bring his cumulative and or
aggregate period in office as
president beyond the eight years
maximum period allowable by the
Constitution;
•whether having regards to the
intendment and the general scheme
of the Constitution of the Federal
Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as
amended) especially section 1(1) &
(2), 135 (1)&(2), 137 (1)(b), 140 (1) &
(2), 142(1)& (2) and 146(1) (3) (b)&
(c) thereof, the period the defendant
served as President from May 6,
2010 to May 28, 2011, ought not to
be reckoned with and taken into
cognisance in computing the total
period he has spent and could spend
in office as President of Federal
Republic of Nigeria.
The plaintiffs asked for these reliefs.
•a declaration that having regards to
the provisions of the Constitution, it
is unconstitutional, unlawful, illegal
and not permissible for any person
to occupy the office of the President
for more than a cumulative and or
aggregate period of eight years when
the country is not at war and it is
practicable to hold election into the
office of President;
•a declaration that having regards to
the Provisions of the Constitution,
the defendant, is not eligible to seek
re-election into the office of
President for another term of four
years from 2015, as that would have
permitted him to occupy the office
of President, for more than the eight
years maximum period allowable by
the Constitution for anyone to
occupy the office of the President;
•a declaration that in computing the
period already spent in office as
President by the defendant, the
period from May 6, 2010 to May 28,
2011 should / ought to be reckoned
with.
•a declaration that having spent a
period of more than four years in
office as President reckoned from
May 6, 2010, the defendant is
without competence, eligibility,
authority or entitlement to contest
for the same office for another term
of four years;
•an order of injunction restraining
the defendant from contesting,
putting himself forward and or
accepting to contest for the office of
President at the 2015 presidential
election;
•and, for such further or other relief
(s) to which the plaintiffs may be
found entitled by the Honourable
Court in consequence of the relief(s)
earlier adumbrated on the
Originating Summons.
A member of the legal team, who
spoke in confidence, explained why
the latest suit is different from
others before on the eligibility of
Jonathan.
The source said: “The suit is
challenging the eligibility of Mr.
President to spend beyond eight
years in office in the light of
constitutional provision that forbids
any person to stay in office beyond
eight years.
“And also there is a court decision in
an election petition case on
Adamawa State, where it was held
that no circumstances should
warrant anyone to hold an elective
office beyond eight years.
“In Marwa and 1 other v. Admiral
Murtala Nyako and others (SC
141/2011), the court held that ‘the
constitution has no room for a
cumulative tenure exceeding eight
years.’
“This suit is different from the
previous ones challenging Mr.
President because he had neither
declared his intention nor was he
confirmed as a presidential
candidate for 2015 polls.
“Thus, the previous suits were
speculative. This suit is hinged on
the fact that having spent six years
in office, the president is seeking
another term of four years. Yet the
constitution says a President can
hold office for two terms of eight
years.”

Pres. Jonathan Was Not The Target In Today’s Bomb Blast – Police

The Nigeria Police says President
Jonathan was not the target of the
bomb blast that happened outside
the Pantami stadium, venue of the
PDP Presidential rally in Gombe
state earlier today.
In an interview with Premium
Times, the Gombe state Police
command spokesperson, Fwaje
Atajiri, said GEJ had long gone when
the female suicide bomber stormed
the road close to the venue of the
rally.
“The president was long gone before
the blast and if not for media, he
would not (have known of the blast)
so he could not have been the
target.
The suicide bomber was heading to
her target when the bomb she was
carrying went off in an empty place
prematurely because of the high
level of security put in place.
The suicide bomber and a passerby
were the only casualties, while six
persons were injured but not fatally.

Chelsea Sign Cuadrado From Fiorentina

The Colombia international has penned
a four-and-a-half-year deal at Stamford
Bridge, with Mohamed Salah expected
to move on loan in the opposite
direction
Chelsea have completed the signing
of Fiorentina winger Juan Cuadrado.
The Blues had long been in
negotiations and the Serie A club’s
coach, Vincenzo Montella, revealed
on Friday that a deal was in place,
with Mohamed Salah expected to
head in the other direction on loan.
Cuadrado has signed a four-and-a-
half-year deal at Stamford Bridge,
after Andre Schurrle’s £22 million
move to Wolfsburg was confirmed.
Having starred for his country at the
World Cup, Cuadrado had been
linked with summer moves to
Barcelona and Manchester United,
but no deal ever came to fruition
with either club.
Fiorentina insisted throughout
January that their prized asset
would only be allowed to leave if his
release clause was paid in full –
reportedly around £26m.
And it has now been confirmed that
he will join the Blues and help the
club’s push for success in the
Premier League, League Cup and
Champions League.
Cuadrado moved to Europe in 2009,
joining Udinese from Independiente
Medellin, before signing for
Fiorentina in 2012.

Governor Amosun Of Ogun Stoned By Tasued Students As He Ran For Cover [See Photo]

The Ogun State Governor, Senator
Ibikunle Amosun while on a
campaign visit to Tai Solarin
University Of Education, Ijebu-ode
on Thursday, 29th January was
attacked by some angry students of
the State-owned university who
appeared not to have forgiven him
over his numerous attempts to
initially scrap the institution.
On his arrival to the institution,
TASUED students on campus who
became aware of his presence
immediately trooped out in large
numbers.
Initially, it appeared to the
Governor and his campaign team
the students had gathered to cheer
them.
There was a wind of change when
some students hurriedly brought out
sachets water (pure water) and in a
jiffy, it became a chorused act as
other furious students joined in
stoning Governor Ibikunle Amosun
with various objects they could lay
their hands on.
The Governor became ruffled before
he was able to run to safety and
quickly drove off with his convoy.
Before now, Amosun had been
against the existence of the
university, giving reason that two
state universities were too much for
his administration to handle.
This led to various protests by
students of TASUED, as well as the
death of a student leader, Com.
Tunji Fashina.
Also, Nigerian Universities
Commission, NUC as a result of
Amosun’s refusal to adequately fund
TASUED delisted courses offered in
the university from 48 to 23.
Just recently, Accounting course got
delisted as a course in TASUED.
This development has left many
students frustrated.
DAILY POST has gathered that
TASUED Vice Chancellor, Prof.
Oluyemisi Obilade is seen as an
accomplice as she remains
undisturbed with the various
happenings in the school system.
