Chad’s Troops Rescue 43 Boko Haram Child Soldiers In Nigeria

Azem Agouna , Chadian Army
Spokesman, said on Wednesday that
they have repatriated 43 children,
who had been kidnapped by Islamist
terrorist group Boko Haram and
forced to become child soldiers.
He said in N’djamena that the
children, who are aged 12 and older
and are Chadian nationals, were
found in the Nigerian town of
Damasak, in North-Eastern Borno .
News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls
that Damasak was under Boko
Haram control until Chadian and
Nigerian forces recaptured the town
in early March.
Agouna said the children managed
to escape during the clashes
between the insurgents and soldiers,
while the local families helped them
to hide from the jihadists.
He disclosed that when it was
certain that Boko Haram had been
defeated and would not return to
the town, the children came out of
their hiding places and asked
Chadian security forces for help.
The spokesman said the army would
look into how and when Boko
Haram abducted the children from
Chad.

Impeachment: No Escape Route For Fayose – APC Elders

The Elders’ Forum in the Ekiti State
chapter of the All Progressives
Congress has declared that there is
no escape route for the state
Governor Ayo Fayose in the
impeachment process initiated by 19
members of the state House of
Assembly.
The body said Fayose has serially
breached the Constitution,
desecrated the esteemed office he
occupies and should be ready to face
the consequences of his actions.
The Publicity Secretary of Ekiti APC
Elders Forum, Dr. Bayo Orire, who
made the group’s position known on
Tuesday, also warned the military
and the police against being used to
hinder the lawmakers from carrying
out their constitutional functions.
Condemning the military for turning
back the 19 APC lawmakers from
entering Ado-Ekiti, the state capital
on Tuesday, Orire said the party’s
elder body was concerned about an
alleged open partisanship of officers
and men of the Nigerian Army on
the matter.
He also said the police and the Army
should not be watching helplessly
for hoodlums to seize the whole
state and interfere with the
constitutional duties of the
Assembly members.
Dr. Orire explained that the
lawmakers should not be blamed for
signing and forwarding an
impeachment notice against Fayose,
saying a responsible House of
Assembly was not expected to look
the other way when the chief
executive was overstepping his
bounds.
He said Fayose has violated the oath
he swore to defend the Constitution
and not do anything to infringe on
the rule of law, urging the people of
the state not to see the action of the
lawmakers as an attack on the
governor but to save the state from
impunity and sliding into an
“irredeemable dictatorship.”
The APC elders’ spokesman
maintained that whatever
constitutional action taken by the 19
lawmakers remain legitimate, legal
and binding since they have met and
surpassed the two-third majority
needed to remove an erring
governor.

No Evidence Of Electoral Fraud In River State – Jega

The chairman of the Independent
National Electoral Commission
(INEC), Professor Attahiru Jega has
said there was no evidence of
electoral fraud Rivers State before
the commision.
He also said the commission lacked
the power to cancel results of
elections after they had been
announced.
The commission’s chairman, who
spoke at the Civil Rights Situation
Room held in Abuja stated that the
Commission after getting the
petition of irregularities in Rivers
State sent three national
Commissioners to investigate it.
According to him, the reports
submitted by the team did show any
irregularities in the election.
“We have no power to cancel
elections results once returns have
been made. On the petition against
election irregularities in Rivers
State, the commission sent three
national commissioners to the state
to investigate it and found no
irregularities in the election in the
report. Some people don’t want
elections to hold, they are the ones
calling for cancellation.
“We investigate the allegation of
fake result sheets in Rivers and our
reports showed that there was
nothing like that,” he stated.
While answering question on
whether he would accept the offer,
if he is re-appointed as INEC boss,
Jega stressed that he would not
accept it as he would want to do
something else with his life.
The INEC boss further stated that
the commission was already in
partnership with the police and the
Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) to
prosecute electoral offenders.
He noted that one offender had
already been prosecuted in
Adamawa state by being sentenced
to six months imprisonment for
being in illegal possession of
permanent voter cards.
He, however, called on anyone with
evidence as it related to electoral
offences to bring such to the
commission, with a promise that
such would be investigated and
consequently tried in court.
On the planned supplementary
elections in Abia State, Jega said
that the elections would hold only in
the wards where election was
cancelled and not in the entire three
local government areas.
Jega further revealed about 20,000
permanent voters card were not
produced before the election was
conducted because the producer
was arrested by the police over the
allegation that he gave the password
to a political party.
“Evidently, some people did not
want us to use the card reader
machine. That was why we allowed
manual election in some few places
where the card reader did not
function well during the presidential
election.
“Some people had already said that
we deliberately deployed card
reader machine that would not in
some zones and to prove them
wrong, we instructed that manual
voting should take place in such
places. But some people want to
take the advantage of that.
“But during governorship elections,
we ensured that all the card reader
machines worked. We had earlier
sent warning to all the RECs that
they would be held responsible for
any card reader that did not work
properly,” he stated.
Earlier, the convener of the
Situation Room and Executive
Director of Policy and Legal
Advocacy Centre PLAC, Clement
Nwankwo had on behalf of the Civil
Societies congratulated Jega and
INEC over the success of the
elections.
He, however, noted that Situation
Room had raised concern over
Rivers, Abia and Akwa – Ibom
elections.
He also noted that there were
complaints about some of the State
Resident Electoral Commissioners as
it relates to their relationship with
politicians in their various states.

Stop The Attacks Or Face Our Wrath – OPC Threatens South Africa

The Oodua People’s Congress, OPC.
has given a 48-hour ultimatum to
the South African government to
stop the xenophobic attacks going
on in their country or incur the wrath
of the group.
At a press conference in Lagos today
April 21st, the founder of the group,
Dr Frederick Fasheun warned that
nobody has the monopoly of
violence.
“While the Nigerian government and
the rest of the world seek a
diplomatic solution to this season of
madness, the OPC hereby warns that
South Africa must end this rash of
xenophobia within 48 hours.
These ill-advised attacks are capable
of bringing out the beast in the best
of men.
And we will not watch as fellow
Nigerians are wantonly killed in
cold blood. Enough is enough.
South Africans must know that
nobody has a monopoly of violence.
They must halt the killings, the
maiming and the looting of
foreigners’ shops in their country.
These incidents of xenophobia will
provoke reprisals against South
Africans and their interests in other
lands.
Thus, beginning with the belligerent
Zulu King, all South Africans
involved in these attacks should be
arrested immediately and
prosecuted for crimes against
humanity.”he said
According to Dr Fasheun, what the
group will do if the attacks
continues cannot be revealed now
but said South Africans should
remember they have many
businesses in Nigeria
“South Africa has many business
interests in Nigeria but of course,
you do not expect me to reveal what
we will do until the time is right.”he
said.

Robbers Gave Me N200 For Pure Water On The Road – Man Who Trekked From Lagos To Abuja

Suleiman Hashimu, will no doubt
enter the Guiness Book of Record as
the first man to trek from Lagos to
Abuja.
‘The Traveller,’ as he is now been
called, had vowed to walk from
Lagos to Abuja if Muhammadu
Buhari won the 2015 presidential
election.
Hashimu arrived Abuja yesterday
evening after trekking for over three
weeks.
Hashimu, a native of Katsina State,
said he was in Lagos when Buhari
was announced the president-elect
of Nigeria, so he left Lagos at about
5am the next day and arrived in
Ibadan around 6pm.
Narrating his ordeal to newsmen
upon his arrival in Abuja, Hashimu
said he had gone to get a police
report at Ibadan to allow for an
unimpeded journey, but that as he
could not wait for the processes to
be completed, the divisional police
officer (DPO) gave him his phone
number.
The journey man said when he first
embarked on the journey, many
persons discouraged him, especially
family members but he never gave
up.
He told journalists that in Ilorin,
people accompanied him for several
miles until he stopped at Oloru,
where he received much hospitality
in Jebba. He said unlike other
villages, he met people who had
heard of him.
He further explained that about 20
people set off with him from Jebba
and after some miles, 18 turned
back, but the other two were more
strong-minded and followed him.
The Traveller narrated how they
encountered armed robbers close to
Mokwa, but that, fortunately, he had
already met one of them in Jebba
and the would-be robber ended up
giving him N200 for ‘pure’ (sachet)
water.
Hashimu said he continued his trip
from Mokwa to Kudu, then from
Kutigi to Bida, and then to Suleja,
after which arrived in Abuja
yesterday.
Upon his arrival in Abuja on
Monday, many residents were
already waiting to receive him.
When residents of FCT saw him, the
chorus of Sai Buhari rented the air.
Unconfirmed report said a top
politician had already paid for a
room in Transcorp Hilton where he
would lodge.

Busted!! Man Who Allegedly Hacked Into Server Of A Bank And Tried To Steal N68Bn Arrested By EFCC

The Economic and Financial Crimes
Commission, EFCC, on Monday,
April 20, 2015 arraigned one Stephen
Omaidu before Justice M. A Nasir of
Federal Capital Territory High Court
sitting in Jabi, Abuja on a two count
charge bordering on theft to the
tune of N68, 028, 000, 000.00 (sixty
eight billion and twenty eight
million naira).
Omaidu, in connivance with Alhaji
K. B Kabiru, Godswill Oyegwa, Ben
and Oliver (all at large) allegedly
hacked into the server of a second-
generation bank and transferred the
sum of sixty eight billion, and
twenty eight million naira into
different accounts for personal
gains.
The offence is punishable under
section 287 of the Penal Code Act.
Following his “not guilty” plea,
counsel to EFCC, S. A Ugwuebgulam
asked the court to fix a date for trial
to commence.
However, defence counsel, Gabriel
O. Sanifu urged the court to admit
the accused to bail pending trial
saying, the offence is bail-able.
Ugwuebgulam objected to the
application on the ground that the
accused had failed to honour the
administrative bail terms earlier
granted him by the Commission and
could do same if not remanded by
the court.
Justice Nasir ordered the accused to
be remanded in the custody of the
EFCC and adjourned the case to
April 28, 2015 for ruling on the bail
application.

Lebanese Woman, others use EFCC vests for robbery [SEE PHOTO]

A 32-year-old Lebanese, Amira Abdallahi, along
with five other suspects, have been arrested by
the police for alleged robberies and frauds
totalling N20m in different parts of Lagos and
Abuja.
The suspects ─ Princewill Eze, 55; Daniel
Okpara, 30; Paul Irior, 37; Bassey Ekpenyong,
39; Royal Nwabuike, 32; and the Lebanese ─
disguised as officials of the Economic and
Financial Crimes Commission, and wore the
commission’s branded vests.
It was gathered that they allegedly defrauded
some Bureau de Change outlets in Lagos with
the vests.
Our correspondent learnt that Eze, who is said
to be the gang leader, was arrested by men of
the Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the state
command on February 27 in the VGC, Ajah area
of Lagos.
Eze’s confessions, it was gathered, led to the
arrest of the Lebanese woman and other gang
members.
Punch reports that, Items said to have been
recovered from the gang included six Toyota
vehicles, one single-barrelled pistol with four
cartridges and a Bryco pistol with six rounds of
5.56mm ammunition.The police also recovered
N4m and $13, 000 from the gang.
During a parade on Wednesday, Abdallahi,
whose father is a Lebanese and mother from
Ishan, Edo State, said she joined the gang in
2014, and had done six deals with them where
she realised about N10m.
She said, “I was born in Nigeria and I grew
up in Lagos. I stay in Lekki area with my
family. I am married with five daughters. The
first money I got from the deals was $5,000. I
could not stop because the money was
tempting.
“I was formerly doing interior decorations
work. That was how I met Eze, who is
nicknamed Senator. I did some interior
design jobs for him in a hotel he owned. That
was around March 2014.“I had done about
six deals with the gang. My role is just to talk
on phone with our would-be victims. They
think I am a foreigner, and they are willing to
trust us. I have made about N10m so far, but
all the accounts have been drained now. I
handed everything over to the police.”
Eze, the gang leader, from Nkanu, Enugu State,
said,
“Before we rob our victims, we usually tell
them that we want to purchase dollars, but we
know most of them do not have an operating
licence. So, we will pretend to be officials of
the EFCC, and we will harass them for not
having a licence. Later, we will ask them to
pay a fine.
“They will bring the money to us in
convenient places like hotels and banks. I
was formerly a businessman. I also run a
hotel. It is about five years now that we
started this project. I was arrested by the
police four years ago for a similar issue, but I
was granted bail by the court.
The police walkie-talkie and other gadgets
recovered from me were obtained during the
Anambra elections. I was not into politics, but
I was part of that election.”
The state Commissioner of Police, Kayode
Aderanti, said the command would continue to
ensure that criminals did not have a hideout in
Lagos, adding that efforts were ongoing to get
the remaining gang member.
He said,
“We have recovered several items which the
suspects procured with the proceeds of their
robbery escapades. Eze, the ring leader, built
a hotel in Edo, while other members also
have houses in Delta, Ogun and Lagos
states.Serious efforts are on to arrest the only
gang member at large. The command assures
residents of Lagos that it always has
arrangements to ensure safety of lives and
property.”

The Big Boss To Return As Super Eagles’ Head Coach

Stephen Keshi, is set to return as
Head Coach of the Super Eagles.
Keshi is expected to sign a two-year
contract extension with the Nigeria
Football Association (NFA) on April
17.
The contract when signed, will see
Keshi return as Super Eagles handler
after his initial contract with the
NFA expired after the 2014 FIFA
World Cup in Brazil.
Mohammed Sanusi, the Secretary-
General of the NFA, told newsmen
in Abuja on Tuesday that the
contract which would be signed on
Friday, would see the coach put pen
to paper on his new job.
“By the grace of God on Friday the
Super Eagles team will have a coach.
Nigerians have been very patient with
this issue, so, it’s just only two days
remaining for the coach to sign a
contract. We cannot announce a
coach without signing a contract,’’
Sanusi said.
The NFA scribe also said that efforts
were being intensified to sign a new
kit sponsorship deal to boost the
signing of a coaching deal for the
Super Eagles.
“We are working assiduously to
ensure we get a kit company that
will sponsor our teams. It is not good
to disclose the level of discussion
with the would-be companies until
the deal is finally struck,’’ he added.
Sanusi also commended the
countries male and female football
teams for qualifying for the 2015 All
Africa Games scheduled for Congo
Brazzaville from Sept. 4 to Sept. 19.
He said: “We are going to
collaborate with the National Sports
Commission (NSC) to ensure we give
the teams quality preparations ahead
of the Games. We were not there at
the last All Africa Games; we were
not there at the London 2012
Olympics too but this time that we
have qualified we must go and make
an impact. The Super Falcons who
have qualified for the World Cup will
also get the full support of the NFA
and NSC, especially in terms of
quality friendly matches.

Breaking News: Maid who kidnapped Orekoya kids arrested-Lagos CP

After the release of the children on Wednesday
night, the Lagos Commissioner of Police has
confirmed that, Mary Akinloye, the maid who ran off
with the Orekoya kids was arrested last night .
He revealed this morning.

We paid the ransom & the children were put in bags-Father of Kidnapped Orekoya kids

Emotions ran high on Wednesday at the Police
College Hospital, Ikeja, where the Orekoya children
were being treated after they were released by
their captors. Their father, Leke, said they were put
in bags by the kidnappers, who left them at the
Shasha area of Lagos.Contrary to the Lagos
state’s police commissioner’s statement that no
ransom was paid, their father revealed they paid a
ransom
They were said to have been released on Tuesday
night, and taken to the Police College Hospital,
Ikeja for treatment.
Punch correspondent, who visited the hospital,
observed as their father, Leke, cuddled 11-month-
old Aderomola.
He sang a lullaby as the child slowly shut his
eyes, drifting to sleep. He had a drip fastened to
his wrist. The other boys ─ Adedamola and Demola
─ whose drips had been disconnected, played
around the Female Ward of the police
hospital..Their mother, while trying to keep them
in check, asked if they wanted to go back to their
“new house”.The six-year-old, who quickly
recoiled, said,
“No, it’s a bad place. I don’t want to go back
there.”
When our correspondent asked for an account of
what transpired and how the kids were rescued,
their father said the family would address the
press formally on Thursday adding, “we want to
rest today.” He said,
“However, I give thanks to the Almighty God
for saving my kids and bringing us together
again. This is not by our power. This is a
result of the prayers of people for us. We saw
the effect of prayers at every point while we
were trying to secure the release of the
children. The children were put in bags. It is
not the work of the SSS, the military or police.
It was God and I am grateful to him.”
However, at the Orekoya’s residence on Lawani
Road, Itire, where relatives and family members
eagerly awaited their arrival, PUNCH Metro
gathered that money was paid to the kidnappers.
The father of the children’s mother, Senior Apostle
Abraham Adekunle, told our correspondent that the
kidnappers sent an account number to the family
to pay the ransom.
When asked for the amount paid, he said he could
not tell.
He said,
“For the eight days that the children were
taken away, we did not rest. But yesterday
(Tuesday), they called us and said we should
send the money to them. They sent their
account number to us. Immediately they
collected the money, they called us and said
they had dropped the children at Egbeda.”
Our correspondent gathered that children were
picked up at about 9pm.
Punch Metro learnt that the children had mosquito
bites on their bodies, which made their visit to the
police hospital inevitable. The children’s aunty,
Adesumbo Alabi, said the family was happy that
the children were returned hale and hearty.
She said the family was able to pay the ransom
through the contributions of members of the public
and relatives, who responded to the family’s
distress call.
“The incident still appears like a home video
to me. When I came here and saw the
situation on ground, I couldn’t hold back my
tears. Even while we were looking for the kids
on Sunday, we did thanksgiving after praying
for hours, believing that the children will be
back to us.
“We thank God the kidnappers asked for
money, because there are cases where
kidnappers don’t even ask for money, and the
next thing you hear is that their captives are
dead. But these ones asked for money, and
the children are back.
“Many people supported us with money. The
appeal we made through the Facebook,
television stations, radios, newspapers, were
not in vain. But I don’t think the kidnappers
were able to collect all the money they asked
for,” she said.
Alabi condemned OLX for not a$$isting the family
to secure the release of the children.
Our correspondent gathered that the police were
on the trail of the kidnappers.
A source said when Akinloye reported at the
residence of the Akinloye for work last week
Tuesday, the victims’ mother took her to the office.
It was learnt that while their mother showed her to
her co-workers as the new nanny she just
employed, the Closed Circuit Television cameras
got her image.
The source said,
“When Akinloye reported to work, she took her
to her office around 8am. She told her co-
workers, ‘see my new nanny’, and they were
all happy to see her. It was the following day,
which was Wednesday, that she left the nanny
at home with the children. The nanny then
said she wanted to buy biscuits for them and
she abducted them.”
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Kayode
Aderanti, said the police rescued the children.
He said, “When we got the hideout, we
cordoned off the area. The kidnappers got the
information that we were closing in on them,
and what they did was to quickly abandon the
children and flee. They are beautiful children
and we have returned them to their parents.”
The state police spokesperson, Kenneth Nwosu,
said the police were on the trail of the kidnappers,
adding that the victims were rescued around 9pm
in the Shasha area of Lagos.

Aregbesola Gives Osun Residents One Week Ultimatum To Submit Illegal Ammunitions

Osun
State Governor Ogbeni Raufu Aregbesola has given those in possession
of illegal arms and ammunitions in the
state a seven- day ultimatum to
either surrender the weapons or be
ready to face the full wrath of the
law.
According to a statement issued by
the governor’s media aide, Semiu
Okanlawon in Osogbo on Tuesday,
Aregbesola gave the ultimatum
while receiving the report of the
Judicial Commission of Inquiry he
set up to look into the crisis
between Ipetumodu and Ashipa
communities.
It would be recalled that the two
communities had earlier in the year
engaged in skirmishes, which led to
the burning down of some houses.
Some persons were also reported to
have sustained varying degree of
injuries during the clashes.
The governor said, “People with
illegal weapons should voluntarily
submit them to relevant authorities
in not more than one week from
now before government begins to
fish them out.
“People should live to the dictate of
the law, our government will after
the one week ultimatum embarks on
house-to-house search for illegal
weapons so that the state can have
peace.
“Whoever is caught after the one
week deadline will face the full
wrath of the law because we are not
in a stone age. The state will care for
the weak.
We are admonishing the strong to
be mindful of those that are not
strong”.
Aregbesola also called on politicians
and persons with those he called
“Private Army” and guards in the
state to immediately disband them.
He warned that the state was
entering into an era where it would
be strict on the maintenance of the
rule of law, peace and order.
Earlier, Chairman of the Judicial
Commission of Inquiry into the
Ipetumodu-Ashipa communal crisis,
Justice Olajide Falola, said the panel
discovered that the axis was flooded
with light and small arms.
He said, “We have virtually resolved
the dispute between the two
communities, especially the market
day issue and boundary. We have
also recommended that some
persons be investigated for possible
prosecution.
“There is a proliferation of arms and
ammunition in the axis of the two
communities.
Those in possession of guns are
reportedly being protected by elites
in the society. We have
recommended that police should
take steps to clean up the area of
these dangerous weapons”.

Two Dead As Fulani and Yorubas Clash in Kwara

At least, two persons have been reportedly killed
and several property worth millions of naira
destroyed after a clash erupted between Fulani
traders and Yoruba natives of Oro-Ago in Ifelodun
Local Government Area of Kwara State.
It was gathered that some enraged youths
allegedly set over five vehicles and 10 motorcycles
ablaze during the melee.
A resident told newsmen in Ilorin, the Kwara State
capital, that the violence was allegedly fueld by
Fulani-Bororo settlers, who reportedly violated a
rule in the area that the settlers should never bring
arms, ammunition and fighting sticks from their
settlements to market on Oro Ago market days.
He stated that some armed Fulani traders came to
the market on Monday.
The source said the leader of the Fulani people in
the area, popularly called Sarkin Fulani,
surprisingly stormed the place where the
ammunition were kept with his people, carted
away the weapons seized by the vigilance team
and handed them back to the Fulani traders.
According to him, violent clash erupted between
the two camps, leading to breakdown of law and
order as weapons were allegedly used freely by
the warring parties.
Police Public Relations Officer, Kwara State Police
Command, Mr. Ajayi Okasanmi, confirmed the
incident but denied the claim that seven persons
lost their lives during the clash.
He claimed that two people were killed, adding that
his men have been drafted to the area to curb the
situation.

Tinubu and Ameachi Clash Over Senate President's Position

The All Progressives
Congress (APC) are now having issues as they try
to figure out which gladiators will take valuable
positions in the nation. According to This Day
sources deep in the APC, the party which won the
March 28, presidential election and secured
majority seats in both the Senate and House of
Representatives has three political blocs within.
These blocs are said to be: the Buhari/Northern
bloc which is made up of the president-elect and
his supporters who have been with him for 12
years and collapsed their structures into the APC
during the merger process; the Tinubu/South-west
bloc led by the former Lagos state governor,
Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu; and the former
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors who
decamped to APC in 2013, led by the Rivers state
governor, Chibuike Amaechi, and Senator Bukola
Saraki.
The battle for political positions is now being
championed by these three blocs.
The Tinubu bloc is said be behind the Senate
minority leader, Senator George Akume, for the
office of the Senate president, while the Amaechi
bloc is pushing hard for the emergence of
Saraki. One source deep in the camp revealed that
Akume has the backing of Tinubu and his group,
which is believed to be the strongest bloc in the
party, but may not have the numbers in the Senate
to push through their goal.
The bloc has three reasons why they want Akume
in the position.
First, the source said that Akume has been with
Tinubu’s group since its days in the ACN,
culminating in his emergence as the Senate
minority leader.
Second, he said Akume is senior to Saraki in the
Senate, having been in the Senate since 2007
while Saraki became a senator in 2011.
Third, the source said Tinubu and his men
understand Akume far better than Saraki who he
said is not close to the bigwigs in the group as is
Akume.
“The Tinubu group is backing Akume because
Saraki seems to be more or less an outsider (to
the group). Besides, Akume has long been in ACN
and he is a senior to Saraki. He is also better
understood by Asiwaju than Saraki,” the source
said.
We also learnt that one other factor not in Saraki’s
favour is his tribe as a Yoruba man, though
geographically located in Kwara in North-central
Nigeria.
However, the APC thinks they would have a tough
time selling a Yoruba Senate president to the
nation due to the vice-president-elect, Prof Yemi
Osinbajo, is also being a Yoruba man from Ogun
state in the south-west.
A source added that it would be a hard sell for two
Yoruba men to become number two and three
citizens respectively, even though they are from
different geopolitical zones.
Despite this, Amaechi’s group wants Saraki in the
position, while the agitation of north-east senators
to produce the Senate president is said to have
had the backing of the former vice-president Atiku
Abubakar.
The senators had demanded the APC zone the
position to their region, saying they are the most
marginalised zone in the country.
This position is being supported by the former
Gombe state governor, Danjuma Goje, who
represents Gombe Central in the Senate, and by
his counterparts in Yobe East and Yobe North,
Bukka Abba Ibrahim and Ahmed Lawan
respectively.
A senator from the south-west, Professor Olusola
Adeyeye (Osun Central), has also indicated interest
in the race.
We also learnt that given different contenders’
interest in the office, it may be difficult for the
power brokers in the APC to reach a consensus
with the contenders on who will become the next
Senate president.
Hence, the source said if a stalemate prevails there
may be a repeat of the episode in the House of
Representatives in 2011 when members of the
House opted to elect their speaker and deputy in
violation of the ruling PDP zoning agenda which
had zoned the two offices to the south-west and
the north-east respectively.
It was against this background that Aminu
Tambuwal from the north-west and Emeka
Ihedioha from the south-east emerged the Speaker
and Deputy Speaker, respectively.
Given the emerging scenario, a source told us that
the Senate might be forced to decide who leads
them through an election that is based on the
coalition built by each of the contenders for the
post of Senate president among their colleagues.
The Senate president position had been held by
David Mark but as the APC are now the majority,
they have to find one of their own.

INEC Fixes Imo Supplementary Election For April 25

There was mild drama Wednesday as
the Resident Electoral Commissioner
for Imo State, Dr. Gabriel Ada failed to
give the accurate number of registered
voters and the number of Permanent
Voter Cards (PVC) collected in the areas
where the Commission will conduct
supplementary governorship fixed for
April 25.
INEC had while declaring the
governorship election inconclusive,
given the figure of registered voters
in the affected areas as 144715,
which was higher than the margin
with which the All Progressives
Congress (APC) governorship
candidate, Governor Rochas
Okorocha was leading his closest
rival, Emeka Ihedioha.
But Ada who briefed journalists
Wednesday, could not confirm the
figure or disclose the number of
PVC distributed in the areas.
When pressed further, the REC, who
had come under fire for the alleged
compromised role of the
Commission during the Presidential
and governorship elections in the
state, said that “the number is
approximately between 145,000 to
150,000 registered voters”.
He also stated that the number of
PVC collected will not form a
threshold for the number of voters
that will participate in the
supplementary election, adding that
“those that did not collect their PVC
before the election still have the
opportunity to do so because only
those with their PVC that will
participate in the election”.
The REC who was not also emphatic
on the number of Polling Units
where the scheduled election will
hold, said that “the election will
hold in over 200 Polling Units in 23
Local Government Areas of the
state”.
He announced further that the APC
won 16 seats in the House of
Assembly elections, while the
election was inconclusive in six
constituencies and has been
rescheduled to hold on the same
date with the supplementary
election.

Finally!! Why I Dropped Out Of School – 2face Idibia Reveals

2face-Idibia
Popular Nigerian musician 2face Idibia has recounted the early days in his career, when he had nothing and had to hustle for a living.
Speaking in an interview with Views Channel, 2face talks about the devastating incident, that led to his dropping out of school.
According to him, he was robbed of all his audio cassettes that he recorded and he was so devastated and later dropped out of school to face music.
He also recounts how he used to claim ‘staff’ when he boarded public buses in Lagos because he had no money to PAY for his bus fare.
Staff is a popular word in Nigeria used by public servants like policemen or members of the armed forces whenever they enter public transport so they would not PAY their bus fare.
He said: “I got robbed sometime in school. All my audio cassettes that I recorded they took them. I was sad for like a year plus. I dropped out and I am like look I am not continuing this thing I am going to follow music.
“I actually confessed to my parents. I told them the truth that I am not going back to school. I am going to Lagos, Festac town. All this waka wey I dey talk so, na molue… staff, sometimes na fight we go fight. Them go pursue us from bus.”
Innocent Ujah Idibia popularly known as 2face is a proud father of seven children from three different women. He is happily married to Annie Idibia and they have two daughters together.

Egyptian court sentences American to life in prison

Mohamed Soltan was working as a translator for journalists when he was among thousands of people detained after Mohamed Morsi, Islamist president, was toppled in 2013 and denies supporting the Muslim Brotherhood

An American citizen was jailed for life in Egypt on Saturday as part of a draconian sentencing spree by the country’s most notorious judge that also saw a death penalty imposed on the leader of the Muslim Brotherhood.
Mohamed Soltan, a 27 year-old graduate of Ohio State University, received a life sentence along with 22 other defendants after being convicted of spreading false news and supporting the banned Muslim Brotherhood.
Judge Mohamed Nagy Shehata also upheld death sentences against 11 leading Brotherhood officials, including its leader, Mohamed Badie, and Mr Soltan’s father and cellmate, Salah Soltan. Mr Badie has already received at least two other death sentences.
The US embassy, in a statement, said it was “gravely concerned” about Mr Soltan and would “continue to monitor his case closely and to provide him with all possible support".
But on Saturday, his family said the State Department should have done more.
“As a nation that prides itself on justice and democracy, it is an abomination that a US citizen who committed no crime has been in prison for even a day, let alone a year and a half,” said his sister, Habiba Shebita.
Raised in the American Midwest, Mr Soltan always maintained that he disagreed with his father’s Muslim Brotherhood politics. He campaigned for Barack Obama in 2008, and moved to Cairo after graduation, finding work with a petroleum services company.
But after former Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi’s overthrow, Mr Soltan worked as a translator helping Western journalists cover a pro-Morsi sit-in in east Cairo.
He was shot in the arm by Egyptian police when they moved to clear the Rabaa el Adaweya square on August 14, 2013, an event that will go down in history as the bloodiest massacre in modern Egypt, claiming more than 1,000 lives. Mr Soltan was arrested the following week.
Known as the “Rabaa Operations Room” case, the prosecution accused the defendants of organising months of unrest after Mr Morsi was overthrown.
Amnesty International described Saturday’s verdicts as an attempt to “silence dissent and flatten opposition”.
Mass trials have become routine under Egypt’s new government, and it is not uncommon for a single courthouse to host hundreds of defendants in a single sitting.
Abdel Fattah al Sisi, Egyptian president, has justified the crackdown as part of a war against terrorism.
No defendants were present during Saturday’s verdict.
Mr Shehata, who is infamous for his draconian verdicts, issued the sentences after reading aloud a Koranic verse that referred to amputation and crucifixion.
Mr Soltan, a dual American-Egyptian national, has refused food for the past 14 months. Once a well-built basketball player, he has reportedly lost over a third of his body weight, surviving on salt and sugar water for more than 430 days.
In an open letter to President Obama last year, Mr Soltan asked if Washington would have intervened more forcefully in his case if he had been born with “blond hair and blue eyes”.
